From Raw Land to Homestead: Building with the Bobcat T66

Two years ago, John Lang and Janessa Denman left city life behind to build a self-sustaining homestead on 44 acres in rural Colorado. Starting with completely undeveloped land, their journey has been defined by hard work, long days, and the reliable performance of their Bobcat T66 compact track loader—helping them turn open space into a fully functional property.

Turning Untouched Land into a Working Homestead

When John and Janessa first stepped onto their property, there was nothing in place—no driveway, no buildings, no infrastructure. Just open land and a vision. From day one, every improvement has been built by hand, requiring both persistence and the right equipment to keep progress moving.

Establishing a homestead from scratch involves a constant stream of demanding tasks. Clearing brush, leveling ground, preparing building sites, and installing fencing are all part of the daily workload. Without efficient tools, these jobs can quickly become overwhelming and time-consuming. That’s where their Bobcat T66 compact track loader became essential.

The T66 serves as the backbone of nearly every major project on the property. Equipped with a range of attachments, it allows the Langs to take on jobs that would otherwise require significantly more time and labor. For example, using a 12-inch auger attachment, John can drill fence post holes in seconds—transforming a task that once took up to an hour by hand into a quick and repeatable process.

Material handling is another area where the machine proves its value. With a hay fork attachment, the T66 easily lifts and transports 1,200-pound hay bales for their horses and Highland cattle. The standard bucket is equally important, helping with spreading gravel, grading surfaces, clearing debris, and preparing foundations for future structures.

Beyond individual tasks, the real advantage lies in how the machine streamlines the entire workflow. Instead of relying on manual labor for each step, the Langs can move efficiently from one project to the next, maintaining steady momentum across the property. This kind of productivity is critical when building a homestead while managing time, energy, and resources.

Durability also plays a major role in their success. The Colorado landscape presents a mix of rocky terrain, uneven ground, and extreme weather conditions. The T66 is built to handle these challenges, giving the Langs confidence that their equipment will perform consistently no matter the environment.

Efficiency, Comfort, and Dependability in Daily Work

For the Langs, the impact of the Bobcat T66 goes beyond just getting work done—it changes how efficiently and comfortably they can operate day after day. Tasks that once required significant physical effort and time are now completed faster and with greater precision, allowing them to focus on building rather than struggling through each step.

The enclosed cab adds another layer of value, especially in Colorado’s unpredictable climate. With air conditioning, protection from the elements, and added features like Bluetooth connectivity, the machine makes long workdays more manageable. Combined with its reliability and performance in tough conditions, the T66 has become an indispensable part of their daily routine.

Looking Ahead

The Langs’ homestead is still a work in progress, with fencing projects underway, a barn planned, and construction on their home just beginning. Each new phase brings additional challenges, but also new opportunities to build toward the life they envisioned.

With the support of their local dealer, Bobcat of the Rockies, and equipment they can depend on, they are well-equipped to continue moving forward. Their story is a clear example of how the right tools and support can turn a long-term vision into steady, achievable progress.
